From "The Shining" to Gucci: A Journey Through Lavish Bathrooms
The film "The Shining," directed by Stanley Kubrick and released in France in October 1980, is considered a masterpiece of horror and visual art.
But what's the connection between Domaine Singulier and "The Shining"? As you may have guessed, it's the bathrooms and toilets that are part of the incredible sets and scenes in the film!
There's the bathroom, entirely painted in celadon green from sinks to toilets. On the ground floor of the hotel, there are also men's toilets in red and white. These toilets are said to be inspired by the W.C. of a hotel designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), the horrifying father of Danny and husband to Wendy (Shelley Duvall), experiences crucial moments in these two places.
But no spoilers here. It's time to plan a Father's Day (or friends, couple, family with older teens, or solo for the brave) movie session. The film has not aged a bit. As a fun fact, the child (Danny) didn't know he was in a horror film. He is now a biology professor in Kentucky.
Interestingly, you might also watch the film with a different perspective knowing that Stephen King, the originator of the book and story, hated the film. In an interview with the BBC, the author criticized the film as too cold and objected to the portrayal of Wendy. "It's one of the most misogynistic characters ever put on film. She's basically just there to scream and be stupid. That's not the woman that I wrote about." Stephen King, through the book, wanted to highlight the devastating effects of alcoholism and domestic violence, which he felt were not adequately portrayed in the film. Did you know? "The Shining" also inspired Gucci's creative director, Alessandro Michele. For the Fall-Winter 2022-2023 fashion campaign (Exquisite), in collaboration with Adidas, the artistic director drew inspiration from several scenes from Stanley Kubrick's films, including the iconic bathroom scene from "The Shining." The photographs were taken by Mert and Marcus.
