AND ITS CRAZY DELICACY. TIMELESS.

Galbanum

History and symbolism

Galbanum is a mysterious, green, and powerful substance. It is said that in ancient temples in Persia and Mesopotamia, its resin was used in sacred incenses. Its aromatic smoke was believed to purify places and accompany spiritual rituals. Ancient physicians, including Hippocrates and Dioscorides, already mentioned this unique resin in their preparations.

Botany and origin

Galbanum comes from a plant called Ferula galbaniflua (or Ferula gummosa), a large herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family, the same as carrots or fennel. It grows mainly on the high plateaus of Iran and Central Asia, where it thrives in dry and mountainous landscapes.

Extraction

Galbanum resin is obtained by making small incisions in the stem or root of the plant. A thick, aromatic gum-resin then slowly flows out and solidifies in the air. This raw material is then transformed into essential oil by steam distillation or into resinoid by solvent extraction, depending on the desired use in perfumery.

Olfactory properties

Galbanum has a very recognizable olfactory signature: a green, herbaceous, slightly bitter, and resinous scent, with hints of crushed leaves and plant sap. Its main aromatic constituents include monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene and limonene, as well as various resinous compounds that give it its depth.

Olfactory profile

Its intensely green, almost wild scent evokes freshly cut sap, crushed stems, and gardens still wet from the morning dew. Galbanum brings to perfumes that rare sensation of a living, vibrant, almost tactile nature.

In perfumery, galbanum belongs to the great green and aromatic materials. It is often used in top or heart notes, where it provides an intense vegetal freshness and a sense of almost wild nature.

This material has marked the history of modern perfumery, particularly in the great green perfumes of the 20th century, where it allowed the recreation of the impression of a lush and vibrant garden.

In our creations

In a perfume composition, galbanum acts like a breath of greenery. It adds relief, freshness, and tension to floral or woody accords. A few drops are often enough to transform a perfume, giving it a more natural, more vibrant dimension.

In a home fragrance, galbanum can help create a fresh, vegetal, and purifying atmosphere, evoking leaves crushed between the fingers, cut stems in a bouquet, or the green scent of a garden after the rain.
