Bergamot is a fruit bursting with sunshine and good humor. It is said that Calabrian sailors always kept one in their pocket, like a solar talisman. In Italian palaces, gloves and fans were perfumed with its sparkling essence, to seduce as much as to protect themselves. Napoleon placed drops of bergamot on his collars and letters to sign his wake.
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is grown almost exclusively in Calabria, on Italy's Ionian coast. It is harvested between November and March. Its precious and fragile essence is obtained by cold-pressing the fruit's zest, a process that preserves all its olfactory freshness and properties. The zest is mechanically pressed, without heat, to release the pockets of oils that cover their surface. It is this ancestral process that preserves the fruit's tangy freshness intact—a little piece of Italy captured in a drop.
Bergamot is renowned for its olfactory properties. It helps soothe tension, purify the air, and boost mood. Its main compounds (linalool, limolene, linalyn acetate) are also recognized in aromatherapy for reducing stress and promoting sleep. Good to know: bergamot oil helps repel mosquitoes, just like citronella and lavender oil.
